Topgear raves about the manual G80 in their latest review.

Out of curiosity, how is the guide transmission in the G80? My direct practical experience with guide transmissions in BMW’s has been limited to an E90 335i loaner many years ago, and that was a really underwhelming practical experience. Lengthy-ish clutch vacation, extensive throws, rubbery sense. I was variety of hoping it’d be superior in an M auto, but my brother had an E90 M3 with the MT, and he explained the encounter equally.

When MotorTrend was testing the M4 with the manual in their PVOTY competitors, they explained the transmission as the “Worst manual in the level of competition.”

Is the transmission seriously that undesirable? Or, is that remaining overblown?

For reference, I’ve been a diehard guide dude for as extensive as I’ve been driving. In those people 25+ a long time, I only went about 24mo without the need of a guide transmission car. I grew up with Honda manual transmissions in the mid-90’s, and I have quite fond memories of them. The shifter in the Integra Variety-R is/was my beloved. Extra lately, I have moved to Subaru’s with manual transmissions. The MT in my 2005 STI is fairly very good – notchy, immediate, small to no slop. Not as superior as the Honda’s, but continue to very good.

I briefly drove a 986 Boxster with the MT and didn’t care for it. Once more, clutch journey was way as well extensive (with the engagement stage being in the vicinity of the leading of the pedal travel), and the shifter felt pretty unfastened.

I guess what I am asking is, is the MT in the G80 the “far better” decision only mainly because it is a manual, and some of us will always favor manuals over auto’s (and yes, I classify just about anything without a bodily clutch pedal to be an auto – DCT, PDK, etcetera.)? Or, is it genuinely a superior transmission that delivers an participating working experience? I get that manuals nowadays will always be slower than their vehicle counterparts – but if they can give a far better and much more partaking driving knowledge, I imagine the tradeoff would be well worth it.

For people of you that bought the MT, is it your only MT motor vehicle?
